Golden Retriever Facts

Golden Retrievers were originally bred in England in the 1860's. They were bred by an avid bird hunter, who was seeking the best retriever he could get. Eventually they made it back to America, most likely by tourists.

Golden Retriever Facts

The Golden Retriever makes an excellent pet, as they are good with children, tend to be well behaved, and can also make a good watch dog, as they are known for their keen senses, and loud bark. They will however accept a nice biscuit from a burglar, as apposed to stopping their entry.

Golden Retriever Facts

They are generally very pleasant dogs to be around, and are very loyal to their family. They also seem to need to be involved in everything you are doing, even if it is just dusting the coffee table. They are not a lay in the corner type of dog, so you have to really like your dog, if you have a Golden.

They will require regular exercise. Walking your Golden at least a half a mile a day is almost mandatory, otherwise they can become over weight. They also have a tendency to get into mischief around the house, if they are not exercised properly.

The Golden has a beautiful coat, but it can present some challenges. It is a double layered coat, to protect them in the water, and from the cold. This coat need regular brushing, and occasional trimming, or else it can turn into a tangled mess. They are also prone to ear infections, so regular cleaning is required.

This breed also has a higher rate than some other breeds, as far as cancer, and hip dysplasia. These can both be expensive things to treat, and traumatic for your dog.

The Golden Retriever Facts

They are an easy dog to train, and seems to learn faster than any dog I ever had. They are attentive, and seem to enjoy the training, almost like it is play time. They are easy to house break, and take to a leash quickly. They also are quick to pick up on fetching an item, and love to play ball. I think this is part of their breed, as they will do it over and over, and never seem to get tired.

The Golden Retriever does have a few negatives, like all other breeds do, but it is the only dog I would want to own. They are a beautiful loving animal, that is sure to give you many years of enjoyment and companionship.
